Hot coating a surfboard blank

The Hot coat is used to 'fill' the exposed weave that is present after lamination

Hot Coat

See post Shaping Hazards before mixing polyester resins.

The hot coat or 'filler' is used to seal the deck after lamination. Place tape around the edge of the board, approximately mid rail.

Lam bottom

When hot coating the base of the board, 'pucker' the tape to allow the resin to form a squared edge at the tail.

Don't forget to tape over the finbox and leash plug in these steps. Filler coat is way less stressful than the laminate coat, as you can apply it with a brush and dont need to worry about lumps as it self-levels. That said, you should aim to apply even strokes and push the coat into the glass firmly. When preparing the deck for hot coat, tape the entire midrail.

Sanding

Grab your orbital sander with a fine grit and go over the entire board, being careful not to degrade the resin by sanding too deep/harshly. make sure you remove any burrs or undulations that may have formed in the drying process.

Consider using normal sand paper so that you can contour a bit easier.

acetone

Clean the board with Acetone.

Wet Sanding

As a final touch, using wet/dry sand paper, apply some water and armorall cleaner and scrub the entire board, rinsing now and then until the finish appears glossy.
