A short bus ride west of waikiki will bring you to a reef break with better waves and lesser crowds than the touristic front beach. Ala moana offers lefts and rights, spanning out enough so that its not overly competitive. There is a carpark right on the water, but if you're without wheels, jump off the bus near Kahanamoku beach and hike it to the water. The paddle out is decent from the bay, but the adventurous surfer can climb the rocks on the pier and cut their paddle time in half.
